He most recently worked as U20 head coach at Ambri-Piotta and last season he was fired from Italian club Pustertal in the fall. And now Stephan Mair, as coach, must give EHC Kloten stability for the rest of the season. The club has chosen the Italian to succeed Larry Mitchell (56), who has been interim coach and sporting director for the past nine weeks because original coach Gerry Fleming (56, Ka) was dismissed.
Mair is known in hockey Switzerland. The Italian was coach of the Swiss competition team Thurgau from 2016 to 2022. A heated playoff match with Kloten already followed. In the 2022 semi-finals, the team from Zurich – then still with Jeff Tomlinson (53) on the board – put the team from Thurgau in their place with a 4-2 victory in the series.
As head coach, he led Thurgau to the play-offs six times in a row, including the semi-finals twice. Besides coaching at HC Pustertal, the 56-year-old’s only experience in a top competition is his involvement with the Schwenninger Wild Wings in the DEL for one and a half seasons (2013 to 2015). He also coached the Italian national team for two years. Ambri released him from his contract this week.
Mitchell still has two games left on the board
Mair’s reputation precedes him. The Italian is known as a tough dog who does not shy away from confrontation, makes his demands clear to the man and implements his ideas ruthlessly. He now takes over a team that has won the last two Zurich derbies against ZSC in convincing fashion, but has previously shown time and time again how easily they can become unsettled.
Because Mair won’t take office until Monday, Larry Mitchell is still part of Kloten’s team for this weekend’s two games against Zug (Friday) and Ajoie (Saturday). The sports director can still play for this important match against the possible play-out opponent from the Jura.
The club also announces that Canadian Hunter Garlent (28) will transfer from EHC Kloten from HC Thurgau to the Swiss League after the end of the season; the associated B license has been withdrawn. The Zurich team also has the B license for goalkeeper Luis Janett (23, Thurgau).
