Meta Hrovat looks to the future without top sport.

In October 2022, Meta Hrovat (25) surprised the ski world. At just 24 years old, the Slovenian technology specialist, who was one of her country’s brightest talents, announced her retirement. Hrovat wrote on Instagram at the time that she had “lost the sparkle in her eyes” and was no longer willing to dedicate herself to skiing to the extent that she needed to. That’s why she drew a line after 84 World Cup races and four third places in the giant slalom.

However, Hrovat could not last long without skiing. Just six months later, her world looked different again. The three-time world junior champion (in the team in 2016 and in the slalom in 2018 and 2019) announced her retirement. “Meta has decided to make a comeback. She feels like skiing is still her world,” Slovenian ski boss Janez Slivnik said at a news conference.

Back prevents comeback

But she has not returned to the World Cup circuit since. She had to miss the start in Sölden (Austria) due to back problems. They also did not allow any use for the rest of the season. And now it is clear: the comeback after the resignation will not happen.

For the second time in fifteen months, Hrovat ends her career. “If it doesn’t work, don’t hit your head against the wall, find a way around it,” she writes on Instagram. And adds: “That’s it. There will be no farewell party this time!” She wishes everyone “have fun with what you do and don’t worry if ‘life’ gets in the way.”

She repeatedly wondered whether she should follow her passion, which faded over the years, or her curiosity. The answer she found: “Follow your passion while you can still see its traces.” For skiing, these have now faded, even though Hrovat announces that she wants to pass on all her experience to the next generation. Because for her it is clear “that skiing is the coolest sport in the world, maybe just in a different form”. (beer)
