October 30, 2023. Marco Degennaro, sports director of sensational newcomer Yverdon-Sport, is summoned to the office of the new club owners from the US. There, new president Jeffrey Saunders tells him he is no longer needed. From now on, the sport will be regulated by the new owners themselves. And besides, the coach has to go too.

This will be referred to below. Schälli and Degennaro give each other the handle. The Zurich resident also accepts his resignation. What the sports director found out a few minutes earlier…

Degennaro also resigned from the competition committee

And yet: Degennaro, a well-connected, intimate expert on Swiss football, accepts his resignation with great patience: “I absolutely understand when new owners have new ideas. Actually, I am no longer needed.” As consistent as he is, he will also resign from the Swiss football league committee at the end of this year.

Yverdon should have ended on December 31st. But it isn’t. How is that? “Well, Saunders and Co. asked me if I could help them during the transfer period. Because of the contracts and all that. I said yes.” And so it is agreed that the contract of Bruce Springsteen’s superfan will be terminated at the end of February. “That’s good. Because then I will be free immediately.”

Goalkeeper Bernardoni came thanks to… Degennaro

And for Yverdon, it was already worth it to keep Degennaro for another two months. Let’s take Bernardoni’s example. Thanks to his Wallis connections – Degennaro was general manager of FC Sion for many years and is still an advisor to president Christian Constantin – the Vaudois have a new goalkeeper. Degennaro recalled that player agent Michel Urscheler once offered him a certain Anthony Racioppi. He is currently unavailable and wants to continue fighting at YB for the next half season. But Urscheler still has a goalkeeper at his disposal: Paul Bernardoni (26), a Frenchman who managed to keep the goal 181 times in Ligue 1. The deal goes through. And he is just one of five transfers the newcomer makes. The Americans are more than serious about their stay in the competition.

And Degennaro? FC Sion certainly needs another general manager. The position is currently vacant. He shrugs. He is under contract until February 29. Only then will he think about his future.
