Do you want to make a big impression in the second run, avoid the time handicap from the first run and win? What Marco Odermatt (26) achieved in the night giant slalom in Schladming with his jump from 11th to his usual 1st place, Vreni Schneider (59) has also achieved again and again during her illustrious career.

Schneider thus became the queen of the second points. The woman from Elmer could empathize very well with Odermatt. “He had a very unleashed run,” Schneider tells Blick, “but as it is if you were not at the front in the first run: then you first have to wait at the finish. Even Odi didn’t really know what would happen in the end.

Back in top form after Kitzbühel

But even when the final result was not yet clear, the three-time Olympic champion knew immediately: Odermatt had once again shown his great class.

“It was a brilliant second run. What Odi does is simply fantastic. It’s huge that after this weekend in Kitzbühel he was so ready for a race like this again,” says Schneider enthusiastically. «In the first run he seemed to have to get used to the light at night. But then he outclasses everyone in this second run.”

No new Odermatt dimension

But no matter how fascinating it is for the ski fans and how scary it is for his opponents: winning in Schladming despite making mistakes in the first run may be an Odermatt masterpiece – it is not a new dimension in his work. Because it is normal this winter that the man from Nidwalden can ride one second faster than the rest of the field during a giant slalom run.

In the ‘Night Race’, rest leader Manuel Feller (31) also ultimately failed due to the dominator’s drive. Even if only for once by a paltry 0.05 seconds. Vreni Schneider talks about the flow effect: “Feller also drove very well. But if you ride the wave of success like Odi, everything will be fine. Then you win by five hundredths. It’s really impressive how he manages to do all this. He has no opponents anymore!”
