David Reinbacher’s final season in overdrive: enormous talent, breakthrough in the NL, scout magnet in the NHL, great season, national team and World Cup debut, first-round draft. And this season? Return from Montreal, criticism online, injuries, bad form – and well on the way back to himself.
EHC Kloten’s defender jewel has catapulted to the heights of the hockey world at high speed. A teenager must first come to terms with the expectations that come with it. The fact that Reinbacher was drafted as a number 5 by the Canadiens from the hockey-mad city of Montreal did not only bring glitz and glamour. But a lot of pressure. And criticism from the social and sports media world.
To get an idea of it, it has not gone unnoticed in Montreal that EHC Kloten recently hired a right-wing shooter, defenseman Dario Sidler. That led to speculation about what this means for Reinbacher’s role in the defense. After last summer’s draft, fans were skeptical that the Canadiens had selected the young Austrian.
Back to lightheartedness
There was a lot to like about the 19-year-old, who was mainly characterized last season by his carefree attitude on the ice and his simultaneous maturity in the game. He sometimes lost this lightheartedness. ‘It was not easy. My life has changed completely. “Expectations are somewhat lower,” Reinbacher honestly reflects.
He describes the season as a roller coaster ride. Returning from his injuries (hand, knee) was more difficult than expected. The fact that he couldn’t simply build on last year’s strong performance was a burden. He had a hard time, but most of all, he spoke openly about his situation with people he trusted. Such as captain and mentor Steve Kellenberger (36) or ex-coach and sponsor Jeff Tomlinson (53). That helped him. As well as the realization that he doesn’t need to change anything in his game and doesn’t want to do too much on the ice.
Since the turn of the year, Reinbacher has been doing better again. He has learned a lot from the difficult autumn. “That gives me support and confidence. It was a challenge. I have tried a lot to get out of this low point.” The talent knows: “That was a good lesson for the future.” It is important for him that he feels the support of the Canadiens in this process of (mental) strength.
He is also increasingly staying away from social media. Because the dynamics that can develop there – in hockey-crazy Canada – can have a negative impact on a younger and aspiring player. “I also learned this lesson,” says Reinbacher, “I found my joy again.”
