Christoph Steinert can still dream of winning the European Championship title in his own country.

The German handball players fought their way back into the medal race at the European Home Championships with a 35:28 victory against Hungary and pushed the door wide open for a place in the semi-finals.

The Germans now have progress back in their own hands. With five points, the hosts are in second place ahead of the final match against Croatia, behind the already qualified Olympic champions France. Hungary and Austria, both with four points, also have a chance of reaching the semi-finals. However, the two countries must hope that the Germans lose a point.

Before the German match, the incredible run of Austrian handball players at this European Championship was stopped by France. In the third main round match, sixth overall in the final round, Austria left the field as losers for the first time in the 28:33 defeat in Cologne, despite a small half-time lead (16:15) and a strong performance.
