In mid-January, Rémi Cuche (23) finished second in the European Cup Super-G in Saalbach (Austria) – his first podium finish at this level. Partly thanks to this achievement, he is rewarded with a trip to the World Cup station Kitzbühel (Ö). For the first time he can ride the Streif, where his uncle Didier Cuche (49) was celebrated as winner six times (five times downhill, once Super-G).
After the 56th place in the first training, the shock followed in the second. Before entering the steep slope, Cuche received a heavy blow to the knee. It can prevent a fall, but further driving is not possible. He immediately grabs his left knee, his face contorted in pain. The helicopter has to get him off the runway.
His uncle Didier Cuche sees the ugly images on a monitor in the coaching room. “It looks like Rémi has torn his cruciate ligament,” he says with tears in his eyes. A remote diagnosis that has not yet been confirmed. But now, five days later, Rémi Cuche is speaking out for the first time since this incident.
Childhood dream fulfilled
“I have no words to describe how I felt last week,” he wrote on Instagram. “I am fulfilling my greatest childhood dream: skiing on the legendary Streif.” And this one comes at a high price. As Cuche further writes, examinations revealed a partial tear of the anterior cruciate ligament.
Even if he doesn’t have the words, he doesn’t think about giving up. On the contrary. “This experience made me realize that I live for these minutes of adrenaline and that unfortunately there is a certain risk involved,” says Cuche. Now a new battle against myself begins “and I will do everything I can to come out stronger.”
Unfortunately, he knows all too well how to fight back against a torn ACL. He suffered one on his right side in March 2019 and then on his left side 534 days later in September 2020. This time, Cuche has a clear goal in mind: “Hopefully I can take revenge on this route.” (beer)
