If Morgan Riddle (26) intended the bet to encourage her boyfriend, then she certainly achieved her goal. Now she has to give birth!
The influencer, who has been accompanying American tennis star Taylor Fritz (25) on tour for years, wanted to take her partner off his high horse for the round of 16 match with Stefanos Tsitsipas (25). “She said I went into the match too confident – because I thought I would win,” Fritz revealed after the match, in which he actually won 7:6, 5:7, 6:3, 6:3.
“I tried, but…”
Riddle, who was described by the New York Times last year as the ‘most famous woman in men’s tennis’, had previously caused a stir with an Instagram post. “If Taylor wins, I will eat a glass of Vegemite live,” the American wrote.
Vegemite? This is a dark brown, salty-bitter tasting spread made from concentrated yeast extract. A special Australian product now waiting to be consumed by Riddle. When asked about it, Fritz explained in the interview that he “wouldn’t participate”: “I’ve tried it before, but I’m not the biggest fan of it.”
Now a bigger piece awaits
But his girlfriend can no longer avoid paying her bet, the world number 12 promises: “I will make sure it happens.” Riddle, listening to the action in the stands, laughs. She knows she brought this on herself. But in return, she might have gotten a few percent more out of her partner to beat Tsitsipas.
Now Fritz faces the ultimate Aussie Open challenge with ten-time Melbourne winner Novak Djokovic (36) in the quarter-finals (04:30 CET). Too much Vegemite in your stomach would certainly not be conducive to ideal competition preparation. (mpe)
