The tragedy occurred shortly before New Year’s Eve in Australia: ex-cyclist Rohan Dennis (33) hit his 32-year-old wife Melissa Hoskins – also an ex-cyclist – with his car not far from their home, fatally injuring her.
An accident or an intentional act? This will be clarified in court in March. Dennis has since been charged with the murder but was released after posting bail.
Last Wednesday, Melissa Hoskins was buried at a cemetery in the Australian city of Perth. However, there were unpleasant scenes at the funeral.
Dennis sneaks into the service
The grieving family had already taken their seats on the pews of the chapel when Rohan Dennis suddenly appeared at the memorial service. He was apparently not invited to the funeral, but still insisted on placing a sprig of rosemary on his late wife’s coffin. The tension then spread in the room.
Dennis then wanted to participate in the service, but was led out of the chapel by an usher. But the drama continues: a little later Dennis sneaks back into the hallway through a side door and eventually ends up next to his daughter. From that moment on you let him do his thing.
Until the end of last year, Rohan Dennis was under contract with Jumbo-Visma, one of the best cycling teams in the world. He made a name for himself as a two-time world time trial champion (2018, 2019), bronze winner in the 2021 Olympic time trial, Tour de France stage winner and Maillot Jaune wearer and also as a three-time Tour de Suisse stage winner.
