The athletics world is mourning the loss of former world pole vault champion Shawn Barber. The Canadian died at the age of 29 at his home in the US state of Texas.

Barber’s manager Paul Doyle announced the news of his sudden death on Instagram. Barber would not have survived medical complications. There was initially no further information about the exact cause of death.

Barber, who was also an American national, surprised everyone at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing when he unexpectedly won the gold medal ahead of German Raphael Holzdeppe and French favorite Renaud Lavillenie. Barber is the holder of the Canadian indoor (6.00 m) and outdoor (5.93 m) records. (SDA)
