The French Ministry of Economy and Finance was raided this week in connection with investigations into football star Neymar’s record transfer to Paris St. Germain, a source familiar with the matter said. The reason for the raid was the suspicion of tax benefits as part of FC Barcelona’s €222 million signing in 2017.
The operation was carried out by police officers from the Central Office for the Fight against Corruption and Tax Fraud and the National Directorate for Criminal Investigations, and several departments of the General Directorate of Public Finances were targeted. On Monday, the office of the general manager was searched. These suspicions, which are only just being investigated, are part of an investigation underway since September 2022 into the venting of influence attributed to PSG’s former communications director Jean-Martial Ribes.
Do you have a tax advantage?
The current investigation concerns whether Hugues Renson, as former vice-president of the National Assembly, attempted to obtain “tax benefits” from the government for PSG with the transfer of 222 million euros. An investigation report sent to the investigating judge on November 21 and seen by AFP raises the question of a possible “influence trading” in which Mr Renson could be involved.
Neymar moved from Paris to Al-Hilal in Saudi Arabia for 90 million euros last summer and is currently recovering from a torn cruciate ligament. (AFP/dti)
