Not only is she 30 years old, but also the marathon woman of the ski circus: Michelle Gisin. The Engelberg native was the only athlete, besides the German super talent Emma Aicher (20), to participate in every race. “I actually decided to take a break. This is the lesson I learned from last year, when I never did that and occasionally lacked the energy. But things are going so well and I feel so good that I haven’t taken a race off the calendar yet,” she says.
You notice it immediately: After two difficult years with the consequences of mononucleosis and the change of material from Rossignol to Salomon, Gisin feels reborn.
At the nighttime slalom spectacle in Flachau (Austria) she finished fourth – despite an accident with the stick, which she lost in the meantime. The figures show: Gisin is ranked better in each of the four discipline classifications than last winter.
“I never made it to the podium before”
But wouldn’t less be more? Gisin took part in 251 World Cup races in her career, reaching the podium 20 times, but achieved only one victory. If she had focused on fewer disciplines in recent years, she would have won more. “I’m not sure about this theory,” she replies.
And explains: “When I only skied slalom before, I never made it to the podium. Only when I started riding in all disciplines did I succeed. I just think this life is cool. Even though I can train for far fewer goals per discipline, the constant change gives me strength.”
Is she a ski romantic? ‘Yes, I think you can say that. “I also prefer racing to training,” she says, smiling. That’s exactly why she’s currently not thinking about missing the giant slalom at Kronplatz (January 30) – she originally planned it that way.
