Hertha president Kay Bernstein is dead.

Hertha BSC mourns the loss of chairman Kay Bernstein († 43). The club announced the unexpected death of the 43-year-old club boss on Tuesday. “Today, Tuesday, Hertha BSC received the terrible news that President Kay Bernstein passed away unexpectedly at the age of 43. The entire club, its committees and staff are stunned and deeply dismayed,” the club said in a statement. The circumstances of his death are still unclear.

Many people on X immediately share their condolences. “We are at a loss for words” or “we are speechless” are statements from, for example, Eintracht Frankfurt and VfB Stuttgart. “We were shocked and deeply shocked when we heard the news of Kay Bernstein’s death,” writes the German Football League (DFL): “We mourn with the entire Hertha family and especially wish the relatives much strength!”

The former Ultra Bernstein has been chairman of the Berlin club since the summer of 2022. He succeeded Werner Gegenbauer at the time and has since been the face of a new beginning. He was concerned about the image of the “approachable” president and wanted to appreciate the fans’ perspective.

Bernstein, once co-founder of the ultra group Harlekins ’98, has repeatedly criticized the professional football system. For example, he called for dependence on TV money to be kept to a minimum. He also promoted the issue of salary caps, a return to the core Saturday start time at 3.30pm and measures against excessive consultant fees. (AFP/dti)
