The successor to Inka Grings (45) has been found. Pia Sundhage (63) will be introduced on Tuesday as the new coach of the Swiss national women’s team. A report from Blue matches the information from Blick.
By signing Sundhage, the SFV achieved a coup. The Swede knows women’s football inside and out and has an illustrious past, both as a player and as a coach.
European championship title as a player
In 2008 and 2012 she led the US to Olympic victory and in 2011 she reached the final of the World Cup with the Americans, which the US lost to Japan in a penalty shootout. As a player, she was part of the Swedish national team for almost twenty years, played almost 150 international matches and won the European championship title with the Scandinavians in 1984.
Sundhage recently coached the Brazilian selection. After being eliminated in the preliminary round at the World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, she ended her engagement. Now she is ready for a new challenge: the European Championships at home in Switzerland. Sundhage has experience with tournaments in his own country. In 2013, she led Sweden to third place after losing to Germany in the semi-finals.
