“I couldn’t find words”

After the broadcast, the former Bayern star explains his emotional outburst to Sport1. «For me, as for many others, Franz was a very special personality. At that moment my emotions were so strong that I couldn’t find the words.”

Effenberg explains that a close bond with Beckenbauer developed during his playing days at FC Bayern Munich. “I played under him when he was chairman of FC Bayern. He always gave me useful tips before the match. We had regular exchanges and that was extremely valuable to me.”

Beckenbauer’s death did not come as a surprise to him, but the death of his former companion still affected him. “It didn’t come out of nowhere. I knew the story. So it was foreseeable. But of course it makes me very sad.”

Beckenbauer was buried last Friday during a private funeral service. An official memorial service for the Kaiser will take place this Friday, January 19, at the Allianz Arena in Munich. (sbe)
