The artificial intelligence-powered computer gave Stan Wawrinka a 75 percent chance of winning when he broke to make it 2-1 in the fourth set. But then things went the other way. Up to 4:6, 6:3, 7:5, 3:6, 0:6 after 3:38 hours he only won one more match against the Frenchman who was only three years younger.
Wawrinka ended up missing in front of about 4,500 fans, most of whom cheered him on. When push came to shove, left-handed Adrian Mannarino, who is ranked better than ever after three tournament wins last year, was able to improve, while the champion of ten years ago also deteriorated physically in the Melbourne sun.
The first sentence was similar to the fourth. Wawrinka managed to make it 3-1 at halftime, but then lost four games in a row. In sets two and three, however, a service break was enough – 5.3 and 6:5 respectively – to win the set and take a 2-1 lead.
Ultimately, Wawrinka lacked the stamina and grit that had helped him win three Grand Slam titles at the height of his career. Due to his elimination, just like last year, no Swiss will reach the second round of the Australian Open. (SDA)
