The Allstar Game will take place from February 1 to 3 in Toronto – without Swiss representation. Last week, the NHL announced 32 players who will represent their team in the Canadian metropolis. There were still eight field player spots open; these were allocated through fan voting.
Now it is clear: there will be no Swiss on the ice in Toronto. Even with fan voting, no Swiss could collect enough votes. It was not figureheads Roman Josi or Nino Niederreiter who got the best chances, but Philipp Kurashev of the Chicago Blackhawks.
Fans ignore Swiss
But the fans choose eight other players. It is striking that players from Canadian teams received a particularly large number of votes. Seven of the eight players are under contract with Toronto, Edmonton or surprise team Vancouver. William Nylander was the most popular fan voter with 1,393,578 votes. The other players who scored for the fans: Makar (Avalanche), Pettersson (Canucks), Draisaitl (Oilers), Marner (Maple Leafs), Miller (Canucks), Rielly (Maple Leafs) and Boeser (Canucks).
The last Swiss in the all-star team so far was Kevin Fiala 2023. There were a total of six Swiss in the all-star team: Roman Josi (2016, 19, 20 and 22), Kevin Fiala (2023), Timo Meier (2022), Nico Hischier (2020), Jonas Hiller (2011) and Mark Streit (2009). (jsl)
