It was the first away win since April 2023. But the 3-1 in Lugano on December 6 ended with a bad aftertaste for FC Basel: During the celebration after the interim 1-0 win for the guests, an aluminum rod flew out of the Lugano Stadium Fan sector towards FCB cheering grapes. And missed it by a hair. The photos show the shock on the faces of Basel’s players.

The case was referred to the disciplinary committee of the Swiss Football League (SFL). And more than a month after the attack they gave their verdict: home club Lugano had to pay a fine of 30,000 francs! The total also includes the fines for the numerous pyroflakes that were ignited in both fan camps during the game.

Fines can be halved

After the pole throw, FC Lugano was instructed to make four suggestions to prevent such incidents in the future. According to the SFL, this includes the development of a concept that allows materials to be used to create choreographies in the future, closer cooperation with the “Curva Nord” to determine the cause of these incidents, the imposition of a stadium ban on the perpetrator as soon as he is identified, and access controls are intensified.

If the measures are implemented within two months, the fine of 30,000 francs can be reduced by up to half. According to the league, this approach is a new provision in the regulations intended to reduce safety-related incidents.
