Will there be football at GC soon? MLS club Los Angeles FC is reportedly on the verge of joining the record Swiss champions.
A report that Captain Amir Abrashi (33) does not want to comment on. “I don’t know what’s going on behind the scenes and I’m ignoring the whole thing. We get our wages, you can’t influence anything else. It is important that we give everything on the field. We owe that to our fans.”
He himself sets a good example, a leader. For the first time in almost seven years, he is not struggling with injuries, he is on the field in 17 of the 18 preliminary round matches and is only missing once due to a yellow card suspension. Coach Bruno Berner praises his captain enormously. Yet there has been no discussion yet about Abrashi’s contract, which expires in June. Probably also because the current leadership around president Matt Jackson and sports director Bernt Haas have their hands tied operationally, the Chinese owners are expected to block all selection changes and GC is about to be partially sold.
Abrashi stands for GC
It can still be assumed that Abrashi will remain with the Hoppers even with a possible investor change. The captain is too important for the club. Sporty, because he can move well, he pulls the boys along and plays a key role in the center. Next to the lawn, because that represents GC like no other.
Abrashi (33) should actually be the great recognition figure of FC St. Gallen. Growing up just 16 kilometers from Espenmoos, the man from Bischofszell TG would meet all requirements. From the Eastern Swiss dialect to the fighting heart. But instead of green and white, Abrashi has a grasshopper in his heart. Since our childhood: “A junior coach from FC Bischofszell once took us to the Hardturm. That was my first visit to the stadium and that has an impact.”
Via Weinfelden-Bürglen and Winterthur he ended up among the record champions almost 14 years ago. Since then, the 50-time Albanian international has played 220 competitive matches for his Hoppers. Will he break the 250 mark and overtake legend Robert Ballamann (†85)?
“I look from week to week. Physically, I’m more ready than I have been in a long time. I enjoy every game. “You never know when it’s ready,” says Abrashi. When asked about his expiring contract, the Thurgauer replied: “First I have to perform on the field, then we’ll see.”
A sentence that should be music to the ears of potential new GC investors.
