The greatest coaching era in the National Football League (NFL) is likely coming to an end. The New England Patriots and their former successful coach Bill Belichick have agreed to end their partnership after 24 years. The 71-year-old led the Patriots, led by exceptional quarterback Tom Brady, to six Super Bowl titles.
The Patriots have been to the NFL finals eight times under Belichick, a record six titles for a coach. With 333 wins, he has the second most wins overall. He also served as a head coach in 511 games, which is also the second most after Don Shula’s 526 games.
Crisis at the Patrots
Since Brady left the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2020, things haven’t really gone well for the Massachusetts team. The Patriots have played just one playoff game since then. With a 4:13 win record, last season was the worst of Belichick’s career as a head coach.
The decision to part ways was taken this week after numerous discussions with club owner Robert Kraft. Belichick actually had one year left on his contract with the Patriots. In addition to Belichick, another longtime NFL coach was fired on Wednesday. Peter Carroll (72) had to leave his locker with the Seattle Seahawks after 13 years. However, the coaching legend remains at the club and will now take on an advisory role.
