For security reasons: the World Ice Hockey Association excludes Israel

The International Ice Hockey Federation IIHF has banned Israel from its World Cup tournaments for security reasons. The IIHF justified the decision with its duty of care to “protect all participants in IIHF competitions.”

The exclusion will apply until the safety and well-being of all participants, including Israeli participants, can be guaranteed. The statement did not say whether any other country objected to playing against Israel. The Gaza war between Israel and the Islamic Hamas was also not mentioned.

The Israeli men’s team was scheduled to play in Serbia in April against the United Arab Emirates in the lower division Division II. The Israeli women’s national team would have played matches against Bosnia-Herzegovina and Indonesia at the Division III World Cup in Estonia in March. (SDA)
