Last week, the NHL announced the 32 players who will represent their team at the All-Star Game in Toronto from February 1 to 3. There were no Swiss there. Roman Josi, Kevin Fiala & Co. can now only hope that they can secure one of the remaining eight outfield player spots through fan voting.

Another Swiss probably has a better chance of getting a ticket for the show event in Toronto: Philipp Kurashev (24). The Bernese does not belong to the crème de la crème of the NHL, but he does play for the Chicago Blackhawks, who have only one star in his line partner Connor Bedard.

The exceptional talent, who is only 18 years old, is believed to be the youngest player to ever play in an all-star game in Toronto. But now Bedard will likely miss the spectacle. He suffered a broken jaw when he was checked by defenseman Brendan Smith against the New Jersey Devils.

“Connor was very sad and dejected,” said his teammate Jason Dickinson. The Canadian is expected to be out six to eight weeks, which would cause him to miss the All-Star Game.

The competition for Kurashev is not great

Since each team must have a player represented in Toronto, the question arises as to who, if not Bedard, should represent the Blackhawks. Why not Kurashev? With 23 points in 34 games, the Nati forward is Chicago’s top scorer after Bedard (33 points), although he missed the first seven games of the season with an injury.

The competition for the Swiss in the second-worst team in the NHL, which is plagued by numerous injuries, is not great. Only Dickinson (28), who recorded 21 points in 41 games and scored 14 times, and Czech goalkeeper Petr Mrazek (31) are considered all-star replacements.

Like Bedard, New Jersey Devils star Jack Hughes (22) was also injured. If he does not get fit in time, the Swede Jesper Bratt (25) and the Valais captain Nico Hischier (24) would be the most popular replacement candidates.

So far, six Swiss have received the All Star award: Josi (2016, 19, 20 and 22), Fiala (2023), Timo Meier (2022), Hischier (2020), Jonas Hiller (2011) and Mark Streit (2009) ) .
