When it comes to the appearance of the referees, associations and competitions: no beards, no long feathers please. Tattoos? There’s no way – unless you can’t see them.
In other words, referees are a visual exception on the world’s sports catwalks – and will remain so, at least until fashion trends take a backflip or leagues change the style rules for their referees to suit today’s times.
Tasty and crispy like crispbread?
Football referees in particular are currently under scrutiny because, next to the guys with tattooed arms, artfully curled hairstyles and finely trimmed beards, they seem as well-behaved and frail as crispbread. But does that really make sense? The referees face disrespect from all sides. Perhaps it would be easier if they did not have to distinguish themselves so sharply from those they supervise?
There will always be a divide between referees and professionals; some protect the rules, others want to break them. This causes a natural urge to reject, and the public only knows a shade of red when it comes to referees anyway. So why make it even harder for the referees?
Let them look how they want, no more little style dictates.
