Victor Boniface (r.) has to go under the knife.

The diagnosis is clear: Victor Boniface, Bayer Leverkusen’s top scorer, has suffered a muscle tendon injury in the right adductor area and will require surgery in the coming days. This was evident from an MRI examination on Tuesday morning, the Bundesliga table leader announced. The 23-year-old will “probably be able to return to Bayer coach Xabi Alonso’s squad at the beginning of April”.

Boniface suffered the injury while training with the Nigerian national team and subsequently returned to the Werkself. The striker will not only miss the African Cup (January 13 to February 11), but also large parts of the second half of the Bundesliga season.

The attacker moved from Belgian first division club Union Saint-Gilloise to Leverkusen this summer. Under the Bayer Cross, Boniface made an immediate impression, scoring 16 goals in 23 competitive matches and preparing a further eight goals. (AFP)
