Football clubs left and right are crying out for reinforcements during the transfer period. One of the refreshing exceptions is Bundesliga-promoted Heidenheim. ‘I don’t need new recruits. I love this team and trust them one hundred percent,” FCH coach Frank Schmidt (50) told the magazine “Kicker”.

In fact, Schmidt’s players have more than met expectations so far. The club, which was widely regarded as a relegation candidate, scored 20 points from its first 16 games. The lead on the relegation place is already ten points.

Measured by market value – according to Transfermarkt.de it is about 49 million euros – Heidenheim has the second cheapest team in the competition after Darmstadt. Yet Schmidt thinks there will be more to come after the winter break. “We need more substance, energy and change from the bench. We have gotten better there lately, but I want to improve our result in the first half in the second half of the season.” Schmidt believes that this should also be possible without new players.

Also opponent Cologne without transfers – as punishment

Heidenheim had already shown last summer that they were not particularly prepared to transfer. The club has only signed six new players to strengthen it – and as a newcomer to the Bundesliga upper house.

Heidenheim will kick off against Cologne next Saturday after the winter break (kick-off 3:30 PM, live on Blick). It’s officially the end of the first half of the Bundesliga season before the second half of the season begins.

By the way: Heidenheim’s opponent Cologne has not signed a new player this winter – but that is rather involuntary. The penultimate Bundesliga team with ex-FCB coach Timo Schultz has been suspended for alleged incitement to breach of contract and is therefore unable to make transfers.
