The room is full again: When will Kloten press the panic button?

Kloten: When is the time right?

Are the ‘sophomore blues’ in sports just empty phrases? As a newcomer who was still in high-flyer mode, Kloten was completely captivated by this dreaded effect. What was achieved at the time with apparent playful ease came to nothing in the damned second year. 2024? Ouch. After the blow in the face in Fribourg (1:7) they remain helpless and goalless against Biel, and in Lausanne (1:5) the next blow in the neck follows. And now the Lakers are suddenly collecting points too. For Kloten, the savings bank is moving further and further into the distance.

Coach/GM Larry Mitchell has to hit the panic button at some point – exactly when? You need a boost of self-confidence at the right time, otherwise you will be fighting a losing battle against the Jurassians from Ajoie, who are tough in terms of play-outs. And then? Does the anything-is-possible theory apply: relegation seems practically impossible in this league due to safety nets, double floors and the state of the Swiss league. Doubts still remain, even if in the Swiss league there is no caliber like the Lakers at the time (2018), who were trained by Jeff Tomlinson to obey the tactics lurking on the horizon.

EHC Biel: Keep it up

Looking back in the rearview mirror, the interview with Antti Törmänen was probably a kind of catharsis for EHC Biel. The controversial statements of the popular ex-coach initially caused a stir at the end of November 2023, but later led to a purified internal climate. Törmänen’s successor Petri Matikainen (“Anti-Antti”) has the matter under such control that much more now seems possible than anyone dared to hope after the disastrous start to the season. In any case, participation in the play-in round (places 7 to 10) now seems almost certain. Will this be a big attack on the top 6?

At the beginning of the new year, Biel completed the mandatory program against Kloten, who was again in heavy turbulence, and the stubborn Ajoulots in relative style, and in any case not much was missing to take a point at HC Lausanne ( 2:3).

Comebacks are the icing on the cake in sports, and please make it as dramatic as possible: a finalist getting into trouble, making headlines on the ice and then getting back on the court without changing coaches and from behind the field rolls up. Please continue.

Winner of the year: Gottéron

Only Friborg will be without losing points in 2024. Three straight wins. The best home team in the league creates magic in the most spectacular arena in the league. This stemmed from the nonsense of Christian Dubé, who not only tickled the best of former bully Chris DiDomenico, but also generally had a good hand at picking foreigners (Sörensen: 24 goals this season). That’s basically his legacy as sporting director before he hangs up his hat at the end of the season. As a coach, Dubé still has to pass a test: finally going far in the play-offs. But until then it will take a while and you can enjoy the current success.
