The emperor is no more: German football legend Franz Beckenbauer died on Monday at the age of 78. But where did the 1974 (as captain) and 1990 (as coach) world champion get his nickname?
Flashback to 1971. Beckenbauer is in Vienna with his Bayern for a friendly match – Austria wants to celebrate its 60th anniversary there. On the occasion of this game, the German libero posed next to a bust of the former Austrian Emperor Franz Joseph I. A photographer captured the moment. The German newspaper Kicker headlined “Two emperors met in the Hofburg”: the nickname Kaiser was created!
As ’emperor’, Captain Beckenbauer led the DFB team to the European championship title about a year later, and two years later the Germans became world champions. Now one of the greatest footballers in the world is dead.
