It sounds completely absurd: the world ski association FIS is considering ski jumping competitions in Dubai (UAE) and Brazil.
“We just had a Four Hills tournament with green meadows. Maybe that was an exception, but maybe not,” says ski jumping official Sandro Pertile in Bischofshofen (A), according to the SID agency.
The Italian is thinking of a mobile ski jump that would be installed in the Brazilian football mecca Maracanã, for example. “You could put on a huge show at Schanze.” Other possible locations for the FIS are China or Dubai with an indoor facility. “You definitely need a five-year plan – and then you have to finance the project. The goal is to be ready in ten years,” says Pertile.
“I don’t know if they can do anything with it.”
The plans are not met with much euphoria among the jumpers. «Personally, I don’t need to fly to Dubai to jump. I find that a bit pointless,” says German Philipp Raimund (23). And teammate Stephan Leyhe (32) thinks: “To be honest, I don’t know if Brazilians can do anything with ski jumping.”
However, the idea of ski jumping without snow is centuries old: jumping on mats has been taking place during the Summer Grand Prix since the 1990s. In 2022, the first regular World Cup match took place in the countryside in Wisla, Poland. (cmu)
