Celestini also believes in him: goalless striker Barry becomes a favorite with Basel fans

After a messy season so far, FCB striker Thierno Barry (21) suddenly finds himself alone in front of the Munich goal during the test kick against Bayern (1-1) in the 65th minute. It is a great opportunity to make it 2-0 in the meantime. But the Frenchman hesitated too long and Bayern goalkeeper Ulreich was barely able to prevent FCB’s second goal.

A scene that fits perfectly with Barry’s first six months on the Rhine Knee. After sixteen Super League games, the summer newcomer is still waiting for his first league goal. But despite the lack of goals – or perhaps because of it – the attacker, who sometimes appears a bit lanky, seems to be becoming more and more of a crowd favorite in Basel.

Racist hostility on social media

“Barry, Barry” echoes through the sold-out St. Jakob-Park after his missed big chance against Bayern. Whistles? No. “The #9 we love” can be read on a banner of two FCB fans. Below you can see a crossed-out shirt of Bayern superstar Harry Kane. Next to it is an arrow pointing to an FCB jersey with Barry’s name being held up.

Barry hasn’t always felt this support from his own fans in recent weeks. The striker has repeatedly faced racist hostility on social media. “Currently, more and more individual players are being treated with hostility on our channels. “Racist comments and in general comments that violate the personal integrity of individuals are absolutely unacceptable,” the FCB wrote in December, backing its player.

Celestini: “Barry will score a lot of goals”

Fabio Celestini (48) does that too. “Whether he only plays ten or 45 minutes, Thierno always has a chance to score. There are attackers who almost never get opportunities. That is why we are always very positive about him,” said the FCB coach after the match against Bayern. “When things finally click, he will score a lot of goals. I am convinced of that.”

Finally, we should not forget that Barry scored twenty goals in the Belgian second division last season. In the coming second half of the Super League, one or two goals will be enough to make the ‘Barry, Barry’ chants in Basel even louder.
