Rafael Nadal fails in the quarter-finals of his comeback at the Brisbane ATP tournament. He cannot use three match points against the Australian Jordan Thompson.
Nadal’s comeback is halted after almost exactly a year out of competition and two hip operations. On the Australian east coast he missed a total of three chances to win at 6:5 with a serve from Thompson and at 6:4 in the second set tiebreak.
In the third set, Thompson (ATP 55), who had never won a set in two previous matches with Nadal, has the greater reserves of strength. The 37-year-old Spaniard occasionally had to leave the field to be treated, but fought through to the end after almost three and a half hours.
How Nadal recovers physically will determine whether he will be competitive at the Australian Open, which starts a week from Sunday. Ranked No. 672 in the world, he could face a seed in the first round of the Grand Slam tournament in Melbourne, which he won in 2009 and two years ago. (SDA)
