An ordinary year? No, that’s not 2024 for Marlen Reusser. She is one of the greatest Swiss Olympic talents in Paris and perhaps the best Helvetic asset at the World Cup at home in Zurich. “Those are my two biggest goals,” she says, but then this! Shortly before Christmas Eve, Reusser fell during training in Mallorca – not somehow, but violently. “I thought: that’s it for 2024! Fortunately, I had several guardian angels watching over me that day,” she says.
Reusser was not unscathed. She suffered abrasions (“the wallpaper has disappeared a bit”) and painful bruises, and the front ligaments of her foot were torn. “We didn’t do an ultrasound, but that’s fine,” said Hindelbank’s Bernese woman. In fact, Reusser is already cycling again, but walking is still a bit difficult.
“If a car had come at that moment…”
But what exactly happened during their violent crash? She says: “It was a long descent. There was a thick oil slick in a bend. I wasn’t driving like crazy, but the speedometer said 60 km/h.” Reusser cannot avoid the fall.
A cyclist was also hit behind her at the same place. Reusser’s friend and trainer Hendrik Werner, who arrived a little later, was just able to slow down. She says: “I slid across the asphalt over the oncoming car. If a car had come at that moment – good night. I was really angry.”
Reusser initially assumed the worst
Before Reusser becomes aware of her happiness, she is in pain. “And I felt dizzy and nauseous. At first I thought it was a broken foot, I was also afraid of internal injuries. After my circulation stabilized, I realized it wasn’t that bad.”
Reusser will no longer use her bicycle – the frame is broken. She objects: “Many people don’t think so, but broken window frames are easy to repair from the inside. However, the paintwork is no longer perfect,” says the driver of the successful Dutch team SD Worx.
