Former world number one Halep has been suspended for using banned substances
Tennis star Simona Halep has been temporarily suspended for consuming banned substances. The former world number one tested positive for Roxadustat during the US Open.
Halep lost that match in the first round to Ukrainian qualifier Darija Snihoer.
The 31-year-old Halep, currently the global number nine, made himself heard with a statement on Twitter. “Today the toughest match of my life begins: a fight for the truth,” says the Romanian, who speaks of an extremely low level of roxadustat in her body. “I feel confused and betrayed.”
However, both the A sample and the B sample indicated doping, the ITIA reported. This is an independent body that oversees the integrity of the sport, an initiative of the four Grand Slam tournaments, the ATP, the WTA and the ITF.
Halep is a winner of Roland Garros (2018) and Wimbledon (2019), this calendar year she won the WTA tournaments in Melbourne and Toronto. She says she is convinced of her innocence. “I am confident that sooner or later the truth will come out.”
