FC Bossonnens – ever heard of it? Probably not if you don’t watch local football in the canton of Friborg. The club comes from a small, rural community with just over 1,500 residents. Nothing has ever happened there, apart from an incident in 2020 when a pensioner picked up a shotgun after a fight with youths.
But now there is suddenly a lot of fuss surrounding FC Bossonnens. And that’s not even because the players of the 5th division, the lowest division of the regional association Friborg, spend the winter in first place. But because the club became extremely popular on Instagram overnight. As incredible as it may sound, Inter Milan is responsible for this.
A late Christmas present from Milan
But one after another. On Friday evening, Inter played at the end of the year in Serie A against FC Genoa (1:1). Before the match, the social media team posted an image of the lineups on Instagram as usual. And there, prominently displayed on the chest of Inter star Henrikh Mkhitaryan: a link to the FC Bossonnens channel. By accident, one assumes.
Thousands of Inter fans clicked on the highlighted Instagram account in amazement – and left FC Bossonnens a belated Christmas present. Overnight the number grew from a few dozen to more than 32,000.
Suddenly a national power
In just a few hours, an unknown amateur club from the lowlands of Fribourg’s popular sport overtook the big clubs from Swiss top football. And now has more followers than the Super League clubs Lugano and SLO combined.
But that’s not all: FC Bossonnens is suddenly a force in the Swiss social media landscape. And suddenly becomes the tenth largest (!) football club in the country on Instagram.
Those in charge of the club are now trying to use their new fame profitably. A joke request has already been sent to Inter Milan via Instastory for a test match. FC Bossonnens in San Siro? It will be interesting to see what else this Christmas miracle has in store for the new giant from Fribourg…
