Manuel Neuer has not yet set a date for his resignation.

A difficult year for Manuel Neuer comes to an end on New Year’s Eve. It was a year “of extremes”, as he says. After his skiing accident a year ago, the Bayern goalkeeper had to wait until the end of October before he could return to the field.

“All in all, this year has certainly had a greater impact on me than all previous years,” says the 37-year-old in “Münchner Merkur/tz”. When he looks back on the past few months, he is grateful for a lot. Redundancy never seemed to be an issue for Neuer, who secretly married shortly before Christmas. He has just extended his contract with the German record champions until June 2025.

“As long as I like it, I play”

He doesn’t know when he wants to end his career: “I still have sporting goals in mind that still need some time.” One of these goals is probably the European Championship at home next summer. He wants to become number one there again after Marc-André ter Stegen held this position in recent months.

Neuer turns 38 in March. As he told ‘Bild am Sonntag’ in 2021, age is not the decisive factor for him when it comes to dismissal: “I’m not saying it’s over at the age of 40.” However, he now reveals that he never said he would play until he was 40. What matters to him: “As long as I have fun, I can show my performance and I am needed, I will play.” (ch)
