Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic is ‘Europe’s Sportsman of the Year’ for the fifth time. The outcome of the survey announced on St. Stephen’s Day by the Polish news agency PAP put the 36-year-old into a tie with Switzerland’s record winner Roger Federer in the 66-year history of the election. Since 2004, someone from the tennis camp has won thirteen times.
21 European news agencies took part in the elections. Djokovic left Formula 1 world champion Max Verstappen (NED) behind with 28 points and world pole vault champion Armand Duplantis (SWE) with 92 points. Football star Erling Haaland (NOR) came fourth, another six points behind.
Djokovic won three of the four Grand Slam tournaments and the ATP Finals this year; at Wimbledon he was only defeated in the final. (SDA)
