Yann Sommer (35) is doing well at Inter Milan. No goalkeeper in Serie A history has reached ten games without conceding a goal so quickly. In total, he has kept a clean sheet in eleven of the sixteen games so far. He only conceded seven goals – incredible numbers! And this after he had been constantly criticized in Munich for six months. And sometimes seemed unusually insecure.
It is no wonder that Sommer and his family feel very comfortable in their new home in the north of Italy. «We found childcare places for our children and a beautiful house located between Milan and Switzerland. Our training ground is about a 45-minute drive from the city center, so it made sense for us to move to the area,” he tells Sportbild.
Online courses to learn Italian
Sommer’s language skills certainly came in handy during the training, which had also surprised Piero Ausilio (51), sporting director of Inter Milan, during the transfer negotiations. «I knew a little Italian before I moved. When things at Inter became more concrete, I intensified it. I am now taking additional online courses and things are slowly getting better.” Furthermore, Sommer explains that he has always been interested in languages.
Before that, however, he was only under contract with clubs in German-speaking countries. Most recently at the great FC Bayern Munich, where Sommer experienced the most turbulent time of his career. “It’s been a good six months for me – with the championship at the end. We had a challenging time. Some changes took place within the club. And there was criticism of the team and also of me,” Sommer says. Yet it was a positive time in which he learned a lot.
Daily exchange with Manuel Neuer
In the meantime, he also got to know many new personalities – including the then injured goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (37): “I have always had a very good relationship with him. Despite his injury, we saw each other almost every day and had a good exchange.” (Men)
