An inglorious facet has been added since Thursday to the already difficult season of Dutch record champion Ajax Amsterdam. In the round of 32 of the Cup, Ajax lost 2-3 to fourth division USV Hercules in Utrecht and lost to an amateur club for the first time in the Cup.
After trailing 2-0 in the 82nd minute, Ajax seemed to be on its way to extra time thanks to late goals from Brian Brobbey and Chuba Akpom, but conceded the decisive goal in injury time. Coach John van ‘t Schip spared himself the embarrassment; he was in Australia for his son’s wedding.
Ajax started the season disastrously in the competition and found itself in the relegation zone for a number of rounds. The team has recently recovered under the new coach and is currently fifth – albeit with a respectable lead of 23 points over leader Eindhoven. (SDA)
