There is renewed unrest in Turkish football.

Turkish professional football is not calming down. Two scandals have rocked the league in recent days. Just last week, the president of Ankaragücü brutally knocked down a referee. Then the club boss of Istanbulspor forced the match to be stopped on Tuesday in protest against a decision by the referee.

The next incident will occur on Wednesday – the third in a few days.

Provocation when cheering at the origin

In the third highest division, Bursaspor, national champion in 2010, welcomes Diyarbekirspor (0:2) on Wednesday afternoon. And causes the next scandal in Turkish football. After their second goal shortly before the end, the guests cheered provocatively in front of the Bursaspor fans. This causes a lot of anger among the home team, which promptly turns into a massive brawl. Fists fly, kung fu kicks are thrown. In the chaos, a fan storms onto the field and later ends up in police custody.

The game has to be stopped, there is pure chaos. The referee sends five players off the field with red cards. In the middle of the Wild West scenes, police rush onto the field with protective shields to protect the visiting team from objects thrown from the stands. The Diyarbekirspor players eventually escape into the catacombs under police protection.

Bursaspor president Recep Günay finds clear words after the riots. He describes the events as ‘sad’. “Our footballers should not be involved in these types of matches. They are professional football players. They should not be provoked when they go onto the field.” The pugnacious footballers “played with the fate” of the club. (sbe)
