Year after year, images of the Super Bowl travel around the world. The NFL Grand Finals is considered the biggest sporting event of the year. Nearly a billion viewers worldwide now tune in. The Carolina Panthers show that things can look different in this glamorous competition.
On Sunday in Carolina, the Panthers faced the Falcons, currently the worst and one of the weakest teams in the National Football League. The local Panthers had won only one of thirteen games before this Sunday. The second victory of the season followed on Sunday – very surprisingly. Eddy Pinheiro made the final score 9:7 with a field goal. To the delight of perhaps almost 1,000 spectators in the almost completely empty Bank of America Stadium.
Failure turns off fans
The official spectator count on ESPN’s website is 70,301 – that would equate to 95 percent capacity in the area that can hold 74,867 fans. A travesty when you see the photos surrounding the game. With as many empty seats as you can see in the photos, it’s a stretch to even talk about 1,000 spectators. Before the game started, tickets for this match were available for a paltry 45 cents.
The bad weather certainly did not contribute to more spectators coming to the stadium. The main reason for the embarrassing photos is probably the continued lack of success under owner David Tepper. Since the entrepreneur (worth $20 billion according to Forbes) bought the franchise for $2.3 billion in 2018, failures have followed failures. In 2016, the Panthers played in the Super Bowl, but now they are becoming the laughing stock of the largest sports league in the world.
