In addition to the Tour de France, Slovenian Tadej Pogacar will participate in the Giro d’Italia for the first time in 2024.
Doubling these two three-week trips in May and July is considered particularly challenging. The last time Italian Marco Pantani won both races in the same year was in 1998. In 2018, both Chris Froome and Tom Dumoulin narrowly failed. The Brit won the tour and climbed to the podium third in the Giro, while the Dutchman finished second in both tours.
Other highlights for Pogacar are Milan – Sanremo next season, the Olympic Games in Paris and the World Cup on September 29 in Zurich. However, this year’s winner of the Tour of Flanders, who won the Tour de France in 2020 and 2021, will skip the cobbled classics.
Hirschi not in the provisional selection
At a media conference in Spain, Pogacars Team UAE-Emirates unusually early announced the detailed race schedule and provisional selections for the most important races. The Swiss UAE riders Marc Hirschi and Jan Christen are missing from the selections for the Giro d’Italia (4 to 26 May) and the Tour de France (29 June to 21 July).
The World Tour 2024 starts with the Tour Down Under from January 16 to 21 in Australia. (SDA/men)
