Will FCB boss David Degen draw the right conclusions during the winter break?

He could “write a book” about what he has experienced this year, says FCB boss David Degen (40). A possible title would be: “The Crash. Basel is experiencing its red-blue miracle!” Worst points average in this millennium, only one win better than in the 1988 relegation season. Embarrassing in the Conference League qualification against the nameless team from Kostanay, defeats against the three promoted teams Ouchy, Yverdon and Lausanne. A fired sports director, two fired coaches.

The newcomer, Fabio Celestini (48), has stabilized the team and has scored twelve (!) points on Ouchy since he took office. Still, the residents of Basel have to go through the books during the winter break. Where changes are needed. And why the contract with the coach should be extended.

The team

FCB scored no fewer than 23 goals in 18 games. The offensive seemed more innocent than a swarm of bumblebees. Djordje Jovanovic (24), announced by FCB boss David Degen (40) as a “complete bomb”, has potential, but – just like with the top chance against FCL – is often in the wrong place. And Thierno Barry also has good skills, but when the ball jumps away from a 1.95m giant like him, he quickly looks more “gstabby” than a bustling magical dwarf. Fabian Frei (34), the defensive specialist, is the top scorer with three goals, which is an indictment. Reinforcements are of course needed in winter. According to reports, Basel would be interested in Servette striker Chris Bedia (27), but the Ivorian’s future is likely abroad. FCB must also look for new players in defense and in the centre. The descendants may also gain more hope. After years of drought, a kind of optimism can be observed there.

The contract question

It is an honor for Fabio Celestini that he decided not to sign a longer contract and only signed until June 2024. However, clarity is needed on this subject, so an extension if you do not want to have a coaching conversation in the second half of the season. After the match against Lucerne, he emphasized that Degen has great appreciation for Celestini. The two sit together during the winter break. “We have to analyze what has happened in the last five months,” says de Vaudois. However, the coach avoids the question of whether he would like new players at Christmas: “I have to discuss that with David.”

The medical department

It is also not known whether Celestini would like reinforcements in the medical department. The fact that he had eleven injured players in the selection in the last preliminary round match against FCL must have made him think. David Degen says: “I don’t think the many injuries are a coincidence.” It is therefore quite possible that changes will also take place in this area.

In any case, FCB will provide material for a book during the winter break. Will the possible title be different in six months?
