The 2023 sporting year is inevitably coming to an end. Time to look back and choose the best of the best. Our categories are not about successes, medals and raw numbers, but about unusual achievements, missteps and actions.
With your help, we will look for the winners in eight different categories. Today: the unlucky person of 2023. Vote!
1
Aline Danioth (alpine skiing)
Although the woman from Uri is only 25, she has already suffered four cruciate ligament tears. The last one in March 2023. But giving up is still not possible for her. “I’m ready to fight for my dream.” It is more than a question whether she will return to the racing track this winter.
2
Enrico Güntert (athletics)
World Indoor Championships in Turkey, 60 m. The race of the Schaffhausen racers at a fast pace. A false start in advance. Disqualification. Swiss athletics profession. Approved. Second attempt, alone on the track. Another false start. Disqualification. Video study. But no false start. Third attempt, again alone on the track. Another false start. Disqualification. This time for good. Competition over.

Iman Beney (football)
There was great joy when the 16-year-old from Valais was called up for the World Cup this summer. But a few days later her dream fell apart again: a torn cruciate ligament. The national team therefore traveled to the World Cup down under without them.
4
Salim Benziar (football)
This is what every amateur footballer dreams of: competing against a big player in the cup and being able to play the match of his life. That was also the case for Benziar, who met FCZ with Red Star Zurich. It’s just a shame that he received his second yellow card in the cup five years earlier and was therefore suspended for one match. And because he has never played in the cup since, he now had to serve the suspension against FCZ – five years later.
5
Michèle Jäggi (curling)
The Bernese woman had re-formed her team with her Olympic dream in 2026 in mind and was looking forward to the future. But now everything is different. Before she could participate in the first competition, Selina Witschonke left the team and moved to Silvana Tirinzoni. But that is not enough. Just three months later, Witschonke’s replacement Elena Mathis also left. She is new in Italy. And Jaggi? She continues to play, but because there are only three, she has to look for a fourth curler for each tournament.
