Shock for Real and Austria star David Alaba.

Shortly after the win over Villarreal (4-1), Real Madrid announced David Alaba’s horror diagnosis on Sunday evening. Medical examination revealed that the Austrian international had torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee.

Alaba will undergo surgery in the coming days. The season will probably end early for him. It is also questionable whether the Austrian captain will start at the European Championships in Germany (June 14 to July 14).

Real leader again

Alaba twisted his knee during a game in the first half and had to be substituted. Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti spoke of “very sad news” afterwards.

Real have temporarily pushed Girona off the top, but the surprise side can regain the lead in Monday’s match against Deportivo Alaves. The goals for Real were scored by Jude Bellingham (25th minute), Rodrygo (37th), Brahim Diaz (64th) and Luka Modric (68th). (SDA/mab)
