Peter Zeidler (61) is happy. “We now have 33 points, we have never had that many under the Christmas tree,” says the St. Gallen coach. With their ninth home win this season in their ninth appearance at Kybunpark, the Espen overtake their opponent Zurich and take second place behind YB. That will remain the case, even if Servette does not win against Lugano on Sunday.

St. Gallen is probably the first YB chaser to enter the winter break. But Zeidler has very little to do with this label. The German is convinced that the Bernese would draw their own circles at the front and writes off the title fight. “The championship title has been awarded. We had to experience that ourselves in Bern,” says Zeidler, referring to the most recent away match of the Eastern Swiss team in Wankdorf, where the FCSG lost without a chance despite high ambitions.

Bo Henriksen sees things very differently than Peter Zeidler

But this evening in Kybunpark shows how different trainers can be. With his ninth home win in a row, Zeidler can look forward to a record in the Super League (Basel 2003), but he underestimates things. FCZ coach Bo Henriksen (48), on the other hand, had recently seen one of his team’s weakest games of the entire season, but sees the title battle very differently than Zeidler.

“It would be crazy to say it’s over,” says the Dane, “we are now seven points behind YB, St. Gallen only five points behind. We have seen at Letzigrund that YB can be defeated.”

Henriksen says it at the press conference, Zeidler is sitting less than three meters away from the Zurich coach, who continues unmoved: “It’s a shame that someone here no longer believes in an open title race. We certainly still believe in it.”

Zurich actually took out the entire mortgage on YB in the last championship week before Christmas. FCZ lost eight points in the last English week. But Henriksen thinks differently: “We should have won easily against Lucerne, and we should also have won against Winterthur. However, we didn’t play as well as we could against St. Gallen. So the preliminary round was maybe a day too long, but not a whole week.”
