The trend is not slowing down – on the contrary. Football clubs are paying more and more money to player agents. In 2023 it was 767.6 million francs. This is an all-time record. Never before has there been so much flow to consultants. This is an increase of 42.6 percent compared to the previous year and is reflected in FIFA’s latest “Report on Football Agents in International Transfers”.
The previous record of 565.9 million francs came from 2019. After a slight decline in the figures due to the corona crisis, this figure has now been pulverized. Another comparison shows how dramatically business with consultants has developed. In 2014, the clubs paid agents $206.6 million. This means that expenditure has almost quadrupled in ten years.
Some earn a lot
These figures clearly show how important consultants are in today’s football world. It’s not just the money spent that proves this: FIFA only uses international transfers for its balance sheet. This year there were 3,353 deals. That is 8.4 percent more than last year.
If you take a closer look at these deals, you’ll see that only 224 of them paid more than a million to the consultants. If you take a closer look, you will see that they are responsible for more than two-thirds (68.8%) of the total 767.6 million francs. Means: Most of the income goes to a few.
European clubs are responsible for by far the most fees (86.6 percent). The English Premier League leads the way with more than 242 million francs. This is followed by Serie A with 100 million francs. The Bundesliga completes the podium with 76.9 million francs. The Portuguese league (52.6 million francs), the Spanish LaLiga (45.7 million francs) and the French Ligue 1 (36.4 million francs) lag far behind.
Women’s football also at record level
The Saudi Pro League now does more than just keep up with the European competitions. The clubs from Saudi Arabia paid no less than 74 million francs to consultants for their purchases in 2023.
Women’s football is still a long way from reaching such figures. But a sound barrier has also been broken there. For the first time, more than a million francs were paid to consultants. The total is 1.2 million. As with men, the trend is increasing. Strongly rising.
