There is hardly any tension anymore. The hammer group F in the Champions League keeps what it promised. Borussia Dortmund already has the round of 16 ticket in their pocket. However, the outcome is still completely open for PSG, Newcastle and Milan.
PSG has the best starting position of the three teams. With seven points, the French have so far achieved two more than the other two. If they win their match in Dortmund, they are qualified. In fact, they would end the hammer group as group winners.
One round down with only seven points?
But even with a draw in Dortmund, PSG risks being thrown out of the Champions League. Because then it depends on the result between Newcastle and Milan. If the English win, the Parisians will have to go to the Europa League. The Magpies would remain in the premier league because they are better off in the direct encounter (4:1 and 1:1) with PSG. In the event of a draw, the direct comparison counts. Compared to the Rossoneri, the French are in a better position.
But if Newcastle and Milan also share the points, PSG could even afford a defeat in Dortmund. Then Mbappé and Co. with only seven points in the round of 16. In the past ten years, only six teams (out of a total of 160 participants in the round of 16) reached the next round with seven or even six points – one of them was FC Basel in the 2014/15 season (7 points).
Milan are in the worst position
Milan has the worst starting position of the three teams. The Rossoneri must simultaneously win in Newcastle and lose to PSG in Dortmund to reach the round of 16. In this case, Paris would spend the winter in the Europa League, Newcastle would be outside it.
While reaching the Champions League group stages is nothing special for PSG and Milan, it would be something historic for Newcastle. The Magpies have played in the Champions League twice so far (1997/98 and 2002/03). The adventure ended twice in the group stage. Does it work on the third try? An answer will follow from 9 p.m. (in the Blick live ticker).
