You have to come up with the idea first. Three-time ZSC champion goalkeeper Lukas Flüeler (35), Lions striker Simon Bodenmann (35), who is expected to end his career after this season, and their former student friend Dino von Büren, who works in the banking sector, have developed their own mouthwash. They sell this under the label “Okkaw”. What this name is about must remain a ‘trade secret’, says Flüeler.
But how do two 35-year-olds from the ice hockey world end up in the dental hygiene industry? You might think there is trash talk on the ice, where the saying “Go away! You stink from your mouth” is part of the basic repertoire and served as a source of inspiration. But that is not the case.
“Four or five years ago we would meet every two to three weeks to discuss business ideas.” The trio, who took a distance course in business administration, wanted to put what they had learned into practice.
“Beautiful, sustainable, Zurich style”
One day they were talking about an ice hockey accident that damaged a player’s teeth. “Dino asked us what he was doing now,” says Flüeler. “We replied: rinse your mouth.” This is how the idea of making your own mouthwash came about. “Beautiful, sustainable, Zurich style,” is how Flüeler describes it, who ended his career in 2022 and now works for a large insurance company.
Said and done. Okkaw is now on the market. A refill container will soon be added to the Ginger & Minth Mouthwash, as well as a mouth spray and toothpaste.
The three entrepreneurs running the project next door also had other ideas. So they worked on a toilet broom that looked impressive. “We were looking for products that weren’t so sexy,” says Flüeler. However, the toilet broom did not make the breakthrough.
The mouthwash is not yet profitable. “But the business plan looks good,” says Flüeler. The young entrepreneurs are not primarily interested in making a lot of money with mouthwash. Instead, they want to gain experience implementing a business idea.
