Soon it will be time. The World Darts Championship starts on December 15 in London. Then Michael van Gerwen (34) will also try to win his fourth title. Since his breakthrough nine years ago, the Dutchman has been one of the most successful darts professionals of all time. He has earned millions in prize money.
But there were also other moments in Van Gerwen’s life. There he worked in his traditional job as a plate layer. And I worried every day about paying the rent at the end of the month.

He remembers one experience from this time in particular, as he recently told the Mirror. He laid tiles for none other than Dutch football idol Dennis Bergkamp (54): “We had to make sure we did it really well. When you work for a legend like Bergkamp, you don’t want to screw anything up,” he says.
He never thought about becoming a millionaire one day. “But it proves that if you work hard and do well at the big tournaments, you can earn a good living as a professional in the darts world,” says the 34-year-old.
By the way, a prize pool of £2.5 million will be distributed during this year’s World Cup. And who knows, one or two coins might end up in Van Gerwen’s pockets. (Gentlemen)
