A few months ago, Alex Fiva (37) moved with his wife Regula (37) and their two children Nalani Lilly (4 ½) and Leif Janne (2 ½) from Chur to Some in the canton of Bern. “My wife is from here and her family lives here. If you have small children, you will appreciate the help. We had no one in Graubünden,” says Alex Fiva.

A great team, whether for interviews or training: Alex Fiva and his son Leif.

It’s eight in the morning when we talk. The ski crosser is relaxed and in a good mood, even if it is a bit restless at the moment. “Sorry, my daughter has to go to kindergarten,” he says, laughing. Meanwhile, son Leif is in a chatting mood and repeats what his father tells us. “Do you want to give me information?” jokes Alex Fiva.

Comeback after knee injury

The sympathetic Graubündenner with American roots seems relaxed. This was not the case last year: Alex Fiva tore his anterior cruciate ligament during a race in Val Thorens, France, and had to undergo surgery. Not only did the home world championship in Arosa not take place, he was also unable to defend his title at the World Cup in February 2023 in Georgia. Very bitter, a long recovery followed. But: “Today I feel great again! I spent three weeks in Chile preparing with the team and was able to participate in everything. I never thought.”

Alex Fiva has been driving electric since February 2023. That is why he has now purchased an electric charging station.

In the beginning he trained differently. “I skied a lot and longer than usual. Then I slowly switched to normal training mode,” says the 188 cm tall, 90 kg athlete.

To the competition in an electric car

Tomorrow Fiva starts in Arosa. “It’s the highlight of the year. Home races are always special. You know so many people and everything is so close, it’s great!” Alex Fiva travels in an environmentally friendly way. “I’ve been driving electric since February 2023.” Because he travels a lot, the ecological aspect is very important to him. With his electric car he gets along well in the mountains. «If I go downhill, it always charges. And it is very quiet. You can have a good conversation. ”

When asked whether there are parallels between electric driving and ski cross, he says after a moment’s thought: “The acceleration. She’s really cool. My children often ask: Are we going with the race car? They like it when the acceleration pushes them into their car seats. Then they always giggle.”

His servant recently came along. “He’s actually not a fan of electric cars. But he enjoyed it. “But he said not to tell anyone about it,” says Alex Fiva, laughing.

Alex Fiva (r.) sought advice from BKW experts when installing his charging station. The project was led by Philippe Burkhalter (l.) from ISP Electro Solutions AG.

Own charging station installed

The athlete already had his electric car when he still lived in Chur. “I always had to charge at a public charging station.” In his new home – a terraced house – he has now had a charging station installed by ISP Electro Solutions AG, a company from the BKW group. “The ISP and BKW have given me very good advice. For example, they advised me not to place the charging station at the back of the garage, but at the front of the door. This also allows me to charge the car when it is parked outside. I had no experience with that.” (See box for further details.) Being able to charge your car at home with electricity from your own solar system on the roof is perfect.

In between, Alex Fiva exchanges experiences with teammate Ryan Regez. “He also has an electric car.” Since Regez lives nearby, they regularly see each other in the weight room in Interlaken – and sometimes even carpool, together with teammate Luca Lubasch, who also lives in the canton of Bern.

“If we fly somewhere, I usually take the train to the airport. We also travel a lot by train with the children,” says Alex Fiva. The Fiva family uses their bicycles for all shorter journeys. «My wife and I try to show our children how to take care of the environment. In the hope that they will do it themselves later.”
