Money and Bavaria are the reason: FC Basel cancels the training camp

Sun, mild temperatures, carpet grass and chic hotel complexes: FC Basel has been traveling to the Spanish Costa del Sol in January for years to prepare for the second half of the Super League in the jet set hotspot Marbella. It goes without saying that the total package without worries is not cheap. Red-Blauw each pays about 200,000 francs for flights, rooms and space rental.

That was once! Because winter training at 15 to 20 degrees is now over. At least this season. The training camp at FCB has been cancelled. Coach Fabio Celestini (48) completes the winter preparation with his team at the usual training ground next to St. Jakob Park. If there is too much snow at the beginning of the year, you can switch to artificial grass.

200,000 francs in savings potential welcome

Maybe there will be a spontaneous team building trip to the mountains, but from now on Xhaka, Frei and Co. throughout the month of January until the start of the second half of the season against FC Zurich on January 21 in Basel.

Can FC Basel simply no longer afford the training camp? Maybe, but there is actually a lack of willingness to spend the money on it. Red-blue currently has to tighten its belt, so a potential saving of 200,000 francs is welcome.

Bayern’s game would only allow a short trip

In addition to the financial aspect, the planning also speaks in favor of canceling the training camp. On January 6 there will be a summit between FCB and FCB, Bayern with superstar Harry Kane taking part in the friendly match in Joggeli. Naturally, Rood-Blauw did not want to miss out on the ticket revenue for this test hit in favor of an expensive trip to Spain.

Due to the early start of the second half of the season (January 21), you can only fly to Spain for eight to ten days after the match against Bayern. And just for a short trip, the financial costs for a club in economy mode are definitely not worth it.
